This calculator is used to generate the good and evil Daimon names from an astrological chart based on the technique described in Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy Book III Chapter XXVI.
The specific technique employed is as follows:
“There are also the Arabians, and many others, and some Hebrews, who finde out the name of a Genius by the places of the five Hylegians, and making projection alwayes from the beginning of Aries, and the letters being found out according to the order of Hylegians with the Astrologers, being reduced into a known order, and being joyned together, make the name of a good Genius: but they draw the name of an evil Genius from the opposite Hylegian places, projection being made from the last degree of Pisces against the order of signs.”

Uh Mr. Lux I got the five hylegs from astro.com, I was wondering if I should round up the degrees for each hyleg or not?

You use the actual degree, so in the example you gave you’d use 5 Aquarius.

hmm… gotta disagree with you there Quaero, I would use 6 in that example. anything over a number falls to the higher degree. so 6’26 is 7 because it has passed six and is in the seventh degree at whatever level. That’s how its usually done in Astrology, though this calculator might have different rules.

Completely correct. However the calculator uses 0-29 for the degrees. So 6º 26′ would use 6 as the degree. The calculations also work correctly. I could have used 1-30 for the interface, but figured it was easier for people to just use the actual degree number from the chart.

It seems Google Translate is also a nifty tool for pronouncing the Greek Version of the Genius Names. They have to be in lower case though or else the translator enunciates each Greek letter.

I want very much to use this but I know basically nothing of the immense and complex subject of astrology. I see on http://www.astro.com where various charts with all kinds of options can be easily generated, can anyone walk me through what chart I need to generate, and where on the chart I take the various information to input above?

This is a pretty awesome resource thanks. I did mine by hand years ago…should have waited.
My only question is why in the Evil Daemon names do you exclude one letter, the one based on the Moon if I’m looking at this right? Also the Greek version includes the fifth letter, again I’m curious why? I don’t remember seeing anything in the text on why they should be excluded, but I’m perfectly willing to admit that my reading of early modern English / Middle English isn’t always the best.

I’m a bit curious where you see a letter being excluded? Having just run some quick tests I’m not seeing a name with less than five letters (one for each Hylegian) in the tests. Perhaps post or email me the Hylegian values that are giving the incorrect results, as if there’s a bug I’ll certainly fix it.

I just ran the data of someone else through and in their case the Greek and Hebrew was both 4 letters. In both cases only the Evil is affected.

Looks like the English and Hebrew Evil names come out wrong for those values. I’ll go over it over the next couple days and see if I can fix the problem.

People are coming out with stuff that competes now, or rather, that attempts to compete. Fortunately what I’ve seen so far is really top heavy with a bunch of stuff from the post-19th century sourced reinterpretations of the Hermetic path, but I would prefer to be able to recommend something clean and concise.

Hey there infinite thanks for this ancient wisdom mediated through modern technology! Quick question: when adjusting the time zone (I’m looking at the F. Rufus Opus link you posted) I’m assuming I should use the time zone that corresponds to the ‘daylight savings’ settings proper to when I was born i.e. although it’s daylight savings now, it wasn’t when I was born, so I should be referencing Eastern Standard Time rather than Eastern Daylight Time, is this correct? It seems obvious, but I’m being meticulous at the moment and want the certainty at least of accurate data.

You would use the chart that is correct for your birth, so for that location / time zone etc. So if daylight savings time wasn’t in effect at the time and location you were born you would not use it for the chart.
